What is Meditation?
Meditation is an altered state of consciousness. It is simply the act of focusing the mind and allowing yourself to be present in the moment.
What Does Meditation Do?
Practicing meditation can actually transform the parts of your brain responsible for learning, memory, emotional regulation, perspective, empathy, compassion, and stress and anxiety reduction. Just like any other practice, engaging in repetitive behavior can physically change your brain. With experience, you can rewire your brain's neurons to operate the way you want them to. Because of this, meditation is ideal for people who want to train their brain to work for them, not against them.
How to Meditate
Can you believe that meditating is as simple as setting the intention to meditate? If someone were to ask you how you fall asleep, what would you say? You might physically prepare for sleep, but once you're in bed, all you're doing is setting the intention to fall asleep and letting your body do the rest. The same practice applies to meditation. You might get your yoga mat, apply some eye shades, and set the intention to meditate. While meditating, there is a place of surrender that happens. As thoughts arise, we acknowledge them and let them go. As emotions come up, we feel them and let them go. You will notice that the more you meditate, the shorter the time it takes to release uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
I am Having a Hard Time Meditating!
A common complaint I hear about meditation is, "I can't shut off my mind long enough to meditate." But think about anything you're good at—it took practice or time to get there. A perfect analogy is getting fit. If you want to get healthy, fit, increase your endurance and energy, you exercise. But how many people skip exercising after a long workday because they are too tired? They continue this cycle of being tired day after day, forgoing the very thing that will eventually build up their energy! It's the same principle with meditation as it is, in fact, a mental exercise. If your mind is constantly wandering, it's because you're not that good at it yet! (But don't worry, there's no such thing as a bad meditation.)
Are There Any Tips and Tricks to Get Better at Meditating?
I'm glad you asked! After meditating consistently for almost two years, I can say the biggest game-changer for me has been implementing breathwork. This can be deep or rhythmic breathing—anything that involves focusing on your breath. Breathing for 5, 10, or 20 minutes before your meditation will allow your thoughts and body to settle and prepare you for meditation. Deep breathing increases oxygen to your brain and activates your parasympathetic nervous system to help you relax and focus.
Can I Lie Down to Meditate?
Yes! You can lie down, sit, stand, walk. You can be inside or outside—whatever feels best for you.
What if I Keep Falling Asleep During My Meditation?
If you find you are continuously falling asleep during your meditation, your body might need sleep instead of meditation. However, you might also want to consider changing the time of day you meditate. If you have more energy in the afternoon, set yourself up for success by meditating then.
